Blocked drain guide
Why Drains Block
A blocked drain rarely appears out of nowhere. Most build up over weeks as waste catches on the inside of the pipe, until one day the toilet will not flush or the shower floods. If only one fixture is slow, the blockage is usually close to it. If several play up at once, or water rises out of the gully outside, the main sewer line under the yard is the more likely cause, and that line needs attention sooner.
Why some Brisbane drains keep blocking
Many older Brisbane homes have clay sewer and stormwater pipes laid decades ago. Joints shift over time, tree roots find their way in looking for water, and reactive clay soils and heavy summer storms can make pipes crack or sag, leaving a low spot where waste settles. When a drain blocks again soon after clearing, something like this is usually going on. A camera inspection can be arranged where needed, so any repair is based on what is actually in the ground.
What to do while you wait
If water is rising, stop using taps, showers, the dishwasher and the washing machine. For a toilet close to overflowing, stop flushing and turn off the small tap behind it. Keep children and pets away from any sewage, and if an outside gully is spilling, leave the grate in place. Skip the chemical drain cleaner: it rarely shifts a solid blockage and can be harsh on older pipes.
When we arrive, we find where the blockage sits, give you a fixed price before any work starts and clear the pipe properly with the right tools. Then we explain what caused it so you can stop it happening again. If the pipe itself is damaged, we show you what we found and quote the repair as a separate fixed price, so you can decide in your own time. Complex jobs may need an assessment fee, credited if the work goes ahead.
