Sewer repairs explained
Sewer Repairs: What to Know
Most sewer problems start quietly. A faint smell near the back steps, a toilet that gurgles when the washing machine empties, a blockage that returns a few months after it was cleared. By the time sewage appears at the gully in the yard, the pipe has usually been struggling for a while. Fixing it properly means finding the real fault first, not clearing the line again and hoping it holds.
Why sewer pipes fail
Many older Brisbane homes still have earthenware sewer pipes laid in short lengths joined end to end. Those joints are the weak point. Tree roots find the moisture, push in through a hairline gap and grow into a mat that catches toilet paper and waste. Reactive clay soils swell in the wet season and shrink in dry spells, which can crack a pipe or drop a section so it sags and holds water.
A drain camera fed down from an inspection opening shows cracks, breaks, sags and root entry points, and traces where the line runs. That means any excavation goes in the right spot and the quote is based on what is actually under the ground.
Who is responsible for the pipe
In South East QLD, the private sewer pipes on your block are usually the property owner's responsibility up to the point where they connect to the main sewer. Exactly where that point sits varies from property to property. Rather than guess, we work out where your line runs and tell you on site who is responsible before we quote, so you only pay for work that is yours to fix.
Rentals and investment homes
Sewer smells and overflows in a rental need quick, clear handling. We can arrange access with the tenant, explain what we found in plain language and send the owner or agent a written summary with a fixed price. Nothing goes ahead until it is approved.
After the repair
Once the damaged pipe is replaced we test the line, backfill, reinstate the area and clean up. Complex jobs may need an assessment fee first, credited if the repair goes ahead. Joseph Tornatore is a fully licensed plumber and gas fitter, QBCC 15519957, and every repair is backed by our lifetime workmanship guarantee.
