How to Shut Off a Burst Pipe

  1. 01

    Find the Water Meter

In most Brisbane houses it sits in a box or pit near the front boundary. Turn the valve clockwise until it stops.

  2. 02

    Units: Find Your Valve

Units often share a meter, so look for your own isolation valve in the laundry, kitchen, bathroom or a hallway cupboard.

  3. 03

    Drain and Protect

Open a low outside tap to drain the line, switch off the hot water if a hot pipe burst, and keep water away from power.

Where is the leak?

Inside, Outside or Underground?

Where the pipe has failed changes how we reach it. Pick the closest match and tell us when you call.

  • Inside a wall or ceiling

Hissing, a damp patch that grows, or drips through a light.

  • Flexi hose under a sink

Braided hoses can split without warning once the braid rusts.

  • Outside in the yard

Water bubbling up near the meter or a soggy strip of lawn.

  • Underground or under a slab

No water in sight, but the meter keeps turning.

  • Hit while digging or drilling

A shovel, screw or drill bit through a line.

  • Low pressure after a burst

Trapped air, debris or a second weak spot in the line.

Cannot find where it is coming from?

If the meter runs with every tap off, the break has to be found first.

Burst pipe repairs explained

What a Burst Pipe Repair Involves

A burst pipe is rarely a slow problem. Mains water arrives with enough pressure to soak a floor, a wall cavity or a ceiling in minutes, and the longer it runs the more plaster, flooring and cabinetry it reaches. The first job is always to stop the flow. The second is to work out why the pipe failed, so the repair actually lasts.

Tracing the damage

Joseph confirms the water is isolated, then traces the damage back to where it started. Sometimes that is obvious, like a split braided hose under a vanity. Other times water shows up well away from the break, travelling along a pipe or joist first, so we check the line either side before cutting anything. Once the cause is clear you get a fixed price, and nothing goes ahead until you agree.

Why pipes give way

Old galvanised steel rusts from the inside until a thin spot fails, often at a thread. Flexi hoses perish and split under mains pressure. High water pressure strains joints so leaks keep returning in new places, and tree roots and shifting clay soil crack older buried lines. Accidental damage from a nail, screw or shovel is common during renovations and garden jobs.

Repair a section or replace the run?

For a single split in healthy copper or PEX, cutting out the damaged length and joining in a new piece is usually right. Galvanised pipe is different: if one part has rusted through, the rest has usually been corroding at the same rate. We show you what we found and explain the choice so you can decide with the full picture.

Units, rentals and insurance

In apartments the failed pipe may belong to your lot or to common property, so let your body corporate know. For rentals we work with the property manager. Insurance cover varies, but we can provide photos, the cause, a description of the repair and a tax invoice.

After every repair we turn the water back on slowly, bleed the air from the lines and check the new joints under full pressure. Every repair is backed by our lifetime workmanship guarantee.

Patch the Pipe or Replace the Run?

Fixing the split is only half the job. The age and type of pipe tells us whether the rest is likely to follow.

The type of pipe tells us if the rest will follow.

A section repair suits

One split in otherwise sound copper or PEX
A pipe struck by a drill, nail or shovel
A single failed flexi hose or fitting
Book a pipe repair

Replacing the run suits

Old galvanised steel that has rusted through
Weak flow at several taps at once
Brown water after a tap sits unused
Repeat leaks at threaded joints
Ask about a re-pipe

Our Simple 3-Step Process

Claiming on Insurance?

  1. 01

    Check Your Policy

Cover varies between insurers, and the pipe itself and the water damage may be treated differently. Ask your insurer before major repairs.

  2. 02

    Photos and the Cause

We photograph the damaged pipe before and after, and note what failed, such as a split hose or rusted galvanised pipe.

  3. 03

    Repair Notes and Invoice

You get a written description of the work and a tax invoice to pass to your insurer, owner or property manager.

FAQ

Burst Pipe FAQs

The questions we get asked most when a pipe gives way.

Can you repair a burst pipe after hours?

Yes. We offer an after-hours emergency service for burst pipes. Call 1300 307 903, turn the water off while you are on the phone if you can, and we will tell you when we can get there.

Where is my water meter?

For most Brisbane houses it is in a small box or pit near the front boundary. In units, look for your own isolation valve in the laundry, kitchen, bathroom or a hallway meter cupboard.

Do you replace the whole pipe or just the burst section?

It depends on the pipe. A single split in sound copper or PEX is usually repaired with a new section. Old galvanised steel tends to fail again nearby, so we explain the option of replacing the run.

Will my insurance cover a burst pipe?

That depends on your policy and your insurer, so check with them. We can provide photos, the cause, a description of the repair and a tax invoice to support your claim.

How is a burst pipe repair priced?

Once we have found the damage you get a fixed upfront price, and no work starts until you agree. Complex underground or slab leaks may need an assessment fee, credited if the repair goes ahead.

Why is my water pressure low after a burst?

Common reasons are air or debris in the lines, a meter valve not fully reopened, or old galvanised pipe that has narrowed inside. We check the pressure and find the cause.
