Hot water repairs explained
Getting Hot Water Back On
A hot water system rarely gives much warning before it stops. One morning the shower runs cold, or you notice water pooling under the relief valve drain. The good news is that most faults come down to one worn part rather than the whole unit, and a licensed plumber can usually test, identify and replace it in a single visit.
Testing, not guessing
Joseph starts by asking what the system has been doing and how old it is, then checks it in a set order: the power or gas supply, the controls, the valves and finally the tank. A lukewarm shower can be caused by a thermostat, an element or a tempering valve, and replacing the wrong one wastes your money. Once the cause is clear you get a fixed price for the repair before any work starts.
Electric elements and thermostats
Electric storage units heat water with an element controlled by a thermostat. When the element burns out the water goes cold, and if it fails in a way that lets water reach the connections it can trip the safety switch. Both parts can be replaced without changing the tank, provided the cylinder is not leaking.
Gas pilots and ignition
Gas storage and continuous flow units rely on a steady supply and a working ignition. A pilot that will not stay lit often points to a worn thermocouple or a draught, while continuous flow units usually show an error code. Because Joseph is a licensed gas fitter, he can test the gas side safely and confirm the unit is safe to use again.
Valves that protect your family
Every storage system has a temperature and pressure relief valve, and most homes also have a tempering valve limiting the heat at bathroom taps. We replace these valves rather than adjust or block them. If the tank itself has started to leak, a repair is no longer the answer and we will walk you through replacement instead.
