Why people filter

What Do You Want to Change About Your Water?

Most people who ask about a filter have one thing in mind. Knowing which one helps us choose the right cartridges and setup.

  • Better tasting tap water

Carbon cartridges are commonly used for taste and smell.

  • Less grit in the aerators

A sediment cartridge catches fine particles before they reach the taps.

  • Filtered water at every outlet

A whole house filter on the main line covers showers and appliances too.

  • Hot, cold and filtered from one tap

A three-way mixer replaces a separate filter spout at the sink.

  • Easier cartridge changes

Isolation valves let you swap cartridges without shutting off the house.

  • Sediment from a rainwater tank

A filter on the tank outlet or after the pump reduces what it carries.

Whole House or Point of Use?

Many homes combine the two: a whole house filter on the main line and a filter tap at the kitchen sink.

Many homes combine the two.

A point of use filter suits when

You mainly want better drinking and cooking water
There is room in the kitchen cupboard
You want smaller, cheaper cartridges to swap
Ask about an under sink filter

A whole house filter suits when

You want filtered water at the showers and laundry
There is space on the main line, often an outside wall
You would rather treat all the water once
You are happy with larger cartridges on a schedule

Choosing a filter

Water Filters: What to Weigh Up

Some people want water from the kitchen tap that tastes better. Others notice a smell in the shower, see fine grit in a tap aerator, or have a rainwater tank that collects sediment. The right filter depends on which of those you are trying to change, how much of the house you want it to cover and how much upkeep you are happy to take on. We talk it through with you before anything is ordered or installed.

Start with the cartridge

Filters pass water through one or more cartridges, and each type does a different job. Sediment cartridges catch particles, while carbon cartridges are commonly used for taste and smell. Depending on the system, a filter can improve the taste and smell of your water and reduce sediment. Knowing what you want to improve narrows down the cartridges, the housing size and whether one stage or several makes sense.

Plumbed in properly

A filter is only as good as the way it is fitted. We mount the housing where it can be reached, add isolation valves so it can be serviced without shutting off the whole house, and pressure test every joint before we leave. Bought a system already? Send us the model or a photo of the box and we will check it suits your plumbing and the space.

Planning for upkeep

Every filter needs its cartridges replaced, and one left well past its schedule can slow your water flow. If you would rather not do it yourself, we can change the cartridges for you and check the seals and valves at the same visit.

Rainwater tank supply

Homes that use tank water for toilets, the laundry or garden taps can collect sediment in the line over time. A filter on the tank outlet or after the pump reduces what reaches those outlets. The right setup depends on what the tank water is used for, so we look at the pump and pipework first.

FAQ

Water Filtration FAQs

What homeowners usually ask before they choose a filter.

Which water filter is right for my home?

It depends on what you want to change, such as taste, smell or sediment, and whether you want filtered water at one sink or every outlet. We will talk you through which filter suits your home before you commit.

How often do filter cartridges need changing?

Follow the manufacturer's schedule for your system, as it varies with the cartridge and how much water you use. Slower flow, or the original taste or smell returning, are signs a change is due.

Can you install a filter I have already bought?

Usually, yes. Send us the model or a photo of the box and we will check it suits your plumbing and the space available before we book the install.

Do you replace cartridges on existing filters?

Yes. We can swap the cartridges on whole house and under sink systems and check the housing seals and isolation valves while we are there.

Can you add a filter to a rainwater tank?

Yes. A filter can be fitted on the tank outlet or after the pump to reduce sediment in the water it supplies. The right setup depends on what the tank water is used for.

How is a water filter installation priced?

It depends on the type of system, where it is going and how much pipework is needed. Quotes are free, and you get a fixed price before any work starts.
