Is Your Stormwater Keeping Up?

Stormwater faults show up during and after rain. If you notice any of these, part of the system is blocked, broken or disconnected.

  • Water pooling in the yard

Puddles that sit for a day or more after rain has stopped.

  • A pit full on a dry day

Standing water, mud or roots inside means the outlet is partly blocked.

  • Water bubbling up from a grate

The line further down cannot take the flow, so it pushes back up.

  • Downpipes spilling at the base

A cracked riser or loose joint dumps roof water beside the house.

  • Soggy lawn that never dries out

A broken pipe underneath can keep one strip wet for weeks.

  • Water under the house or slab

Roof water soaking in beside the footings needs to be redirected.

We Look Inside the Line Before We Dig

  1. 01

    Check the Surface

We start with the pits, grates and downpipes to see where water is getting stuck or escaping.

  2. 02

    Camera the Line

Where needed, a drain camera runs through the pipe to show silt, roots or a broken joint, so the quote is based on what is there.

  3. 03

    Repair and Flow Test

We dig only where the fault is, repair it, then run water through before we backfill and tidy up.

Stormwater in Brisbane

Why Yards Flood

Brisbane gets most of its rain between November and March, and much of it arrives in short, heavy summer storms. A roof can shed a huge volume of water in a few minutes, and all of it has to travel through gutters, downpipes, pits and underground pipe before it leaves your block. If any part of that path is blocked, broken or undersized, the water finds its own way out, usually across the lawn, against the slab or under the house.

Storm season is hard on drains

Leaves, seed pods and roof grit wash down and settle in pits and bends. Tree roots work their way into older clay pipe joints looking for moisture. Reactive clay soils swell when wet and shrink in dry spells, which can crack or shift pipes over the years. The result is a system that copes with light rain and then fails in exactly the storms it was built for.

Where your stormwater should go

On most homes, downpipes connect to an underground line that runs to the kerb, to a street drain or to a drainage line in an easement at the back. Many properties also send roof water through a rainwater tank first, with an overflow pipe carrying the excess into the same system. Either way, water should leave the property in a pipe, not soak in beside the footings.

Keep stormwater out of the sewer

Stormwater and sewer are separate systems. Sewer pipes are sized for household wastewater, not a summer downpour, and roof water plumbed into them can overload the mains and push sewage back up through gullies. Connecting stormwater to the sewer is not permitted, so if we find a downpipe running into a sewer line we will point it out and quote to connect it correctly.

When to call a plumber

Get in touch if a pit stays full a day after rain, water bubbles up out of a grate, a downpipe overflows at the bottom while the gutter above is clear, or a patch of lawn stays soggy for weeks.

You get a free quote and a fixed price before any work starts. Bigger or hidden problems may need an assessment first, credited if the job goes ahead, and the work is backed by our lifetime workmanship guarantee.

FAQ

Stormwater Drain FAQs

Common questions about pits, downpipes and yard drainage.

Why does water pool in my yard after rain?

Usually because a pit, downpipe or underground stormwater line is blocked, broken or disconnected, so roof and yard water has nowhere to go. Low spots and heavy clay soil can make it worse. We check the system to find which part is failing.

Can you do a camera inspection of my stormwater?

Yes. We run a drain camera through the stormwater line to see blockages, roots or broken joints, and to locate the pipe before any digging, so the repair is quoted on what is actually there.

Can my downpipes run into the sewer?

No. Stormwater and sewer must stay separate. Rainwater in the sewer can overload it during storms and cause sewage to back up. If we find a downpipe connected to the sewer, we will quote to connect it to stormwater instead.

Why does my stormwater pit overflow in storms?

The outlet pipe from the pit is often partly blocked with silt, leaves or roots, or a section of pipe has cracked or sunk, so the pit fills faster than it can drain. Clearing the pit and checking the line usually finds the cause.

Do you install stormwater for extensions and granny flats?

Yes. We lay new stormwater pipe and pits for extensions, granny flats, patios and new driveways, and connect the new downpipes into your existing system.

How is stormwater work priced?

You get a fixed upfront price before any work starts, and quotes are free. Hidden problems may need an assessment, such as a camera inspection, first. If there is an assessment fee, it is credited if the job goes ahead.
