Tap repairs explained
Taps, Mixers and Hoses
A dripping tap rarely fixes itself. A slow drip wastes water every hour it runs, marks the basin and usually gets worse as the worn part breaks down. Most tap problems in Brisbane homes come down to a handful of parts, and once we know which tap you have, the fix is usually straightforward.
Why taps drip
Older two-handle taps shut off by pressing a rubber washer onto a brass seat. Over time the washer hardens and the seat wears, so water slips past even with the handle turned tight. We replace the washer and, where the seat is pitted, reface it so the new washer seals. Quarter-turn and ceramic disc taps use a cartridge instead, which we swap for a matching one.
Mixers and cartridges
Single-lever mixers rely on a cartridge that controls flow and temperature. When a mixer drips from the spout, weeps at the base or the lever goes stiff, the cartridge or its o-rings are usually to blame. If parts are available, a repair is often sensible. If the body is corroded, we will tell you plainly and price a replacement.
The flood risk under your sink
Most mixers and toilets connect with braided flexi hoses. Inside the braid is a rubber hose that perishes with age, and when one gives way it can let go at full mains pressure. Replace a hose straight away if the braid is rusty or frayed, has a bulge, is kinked or is damp at the nuts. If we are there for a tap, ask us to check the other hoses too.
Fitting tapware you have bought
Happy to install tapware you have chosen. Check the new mixer suits the number of holes in your sink or benchtop, and for wall taps, the fittings behind the wall. If only one tap has poor flow, the cause is usually a blocked aerator, a partly closed valve or a kinked hose.
Every tap job comes with a fixed price before work starts and our lifetime workmanship guarantee. Joseph Tornatore is a fully licensed plumber and gas fitter, and we look after homes and rentals across Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan, Redlands and Moreton Bay.
