Device types

Basic Protection or a Testable Device?

The device a site needs depends on how much of a hazard its water use poses to the supply. We confirm the hazard rating before anything is installed.

It depends on the hazard your water use poses.

Basic protection is often enough when

It is a standard home with no special equipment
A dual check valve is fitted at or near the water meter
There is no rainwater tank or irrigation tied to the mains
Ask us to check

A testable device is usually needed when

A business has equipment plumbed into the supply
A medical, dental or chemical dosing setup is on site
Irrigation uses fertiliser injection
Fire services connect to the mains

Backflow explained

Backflow: The Basics

Backflow happens when water in a property's pipes runs back toward the mains. It is usually caused by a sudden drop in mains pressure, such as a burst water main or heavy firefighting use nearby, which can siphon water backwards. It can also happen when the pressure on your side is higher than the supply, for example from a pump, a pressurised system or a raised tank. If that water has touched chemicals, soil or equipment, it should never reach the drinking water network.

Why testable devices are checked every year

A backflow prevention device uses spring-loaded valves that only let water move one way. Springs weaken, rubber seals wear and grit can hold a valve slightly open, and none of that shows from the outside. That is why testable devices generally need testing at least once a year, with the result lodged with the water authority for your area, whether that is Urban Utilities, Logan Water, Unitywater or your local council.

Protecting the whole site or one fixture

Some properties have one device at the boundary that protects the mains from everything on site. Others also need devices on particular fixtures, such as a coffee machine line, a dental chair supply or an irrigation zone. A new cafe fit-out, a clinic moving into a tenancy or a tank being connected to mains water can all change what is required, so it pays to ask before the work starts.

What happens on test day

We isolate the device, connect a test kit to its test points and check that each valve holds as it should. If everything passes, we restore the supply and lodge the results. If a valve fails, we explain what is wrong and give you a fixed price for the repair or replacement before we touch it, then retest so the result can be lodged.

If you have received a test notice from your water authority, send us a photo of it along with the device locations. We can book the test around your trading hours, keep your device details on file and remind you when the next one is due.
